Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real Diamonds? The answer is clearer than you might think By Talitha Cummins, founder of The Cut Jewelry

Few things have withstood the test of time quite like diamonds. And that’s not just because of their unparalleled durability. For centuries, they have remained a symbol of love, eternity and luxury. In recent years, there has been a revolutionary advancement in the world of diamonds: lab-grown diamonds. Their arrival has sparked questions of their authenticity. The answer lies beyond their origin. Let’s take a closer look at the inherent characteristics of diamonds along with some compelling perks that set these dazzlers apart in the best way possible.

Reality Check

Let’s get straight to it. Lab diamonds are exactly the same as mined diamonds physically, chemically and optically. This means it will have the exact same brilliance and sparkle. The GIA (Gemological Institute of America) has been certifying lab diamonds since 2007. Here is a closer look at how mine and lab diamonds are the same:
.Both are made of pure carbon and are structurally the same (carbon atoms arranged in a crystal lattice structure, to be exact)
.On the MOHS scale of hardness, they measure at 10 (that’s as hard as it gets)
.They undergo the same grading system by the prestigious GIA
GIA’s 4 C’s: Colour, Cut, Clarity and Carat
.Both have one-of-a-kind inclusions and patterns
So, how are they different? The only thing that differentiates lab and mine grown diamonds is their origin, which brings us to our next point.

Clarity of Conscience

If you’re looking for clarity of conscience in addition to the other 4 C’s; here is yet another reason to love lab diamonds. They ensure you are getting a diamond that is both ethically sourced and environmentally friendly. You can rest assured that you are contributing to the conservation of natural ecosystems and a reduction of the ecological impact associated with mining activities. Lab diamonds also alleviate any concerns related to possible abuses of human rights in traditional diamond mining regions. The ethical production of lab diamonds ensures that workers are treated fairly and work in safe conditions.

Dazzle on a Dime

While we are adding C’s to the equation; if clarity of conscience is the fifth C, make your sixth C cost. Production of lab diamonds is significantly less expensive than the extensive mining procedures involved in producing their counterparts. Lab diamonds also allow for more precision in the cutting process. Thanks to this combination, lab diamonds are typically 30-50% less expensive than mined diamonds. So your dream diamond just became that much more obtainable and with absolutely zero sacrifice in quality.

A Cut Above the Rest

If you were ever in doubt, the answer is crystal clear. Not only are lab diamonds the real deal, but they also boast some serious perks. They offer a compelling alternative to those who prioritize ethical sourcing and environmental sustainability, without compromising on the beauty and quality of the gemstone. Go ahead and treat yourself to that extra carat for doing your part to save the planet (and your wallet).
