5 Must watch movies for the winter-lovers

Winter and Movies are a power couple. Everybody wants them and everybody loves them because they’re so comforting, they bring people together, they’re refreshing and there is not a single person who hasn’t spent their December days cuddled up in a blanket while the sky outside stirred with gloomy clouds with the TV reeling out movie after movie. Sometimes binge-watching series through many seasons within weeks is a sport on its own. If you’re new or if you’re looking for a break from your own list, here are five movie suggestions to help you get a head start.

1. Home Alone (1990)
Directed by Chris Colombus, starring Macaulay Culkin, Catherine O’Hara, John Heard, and many more exceptional actors, is an all time classic movie and the perfect movie too to get you prepared for the holidays. A young boy, Kevin, the trouble maker of the family wakes up one morning home alone. His family seems to have mistakenly left him out as they went on a trip and by the time the realized, it may have been a bit too late. Kevin, while home alone, must fend for himself as a couple of burglars try to break in. The movie entails how Kevin uses his mischief to his advantage against the burglars until his mother comes home. The 1990 hit written by John Huges is till-date a Christmas special movie that you can enjoy with your friends and family.

2. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (2005)
This movie was my entire childhood and I’ll proudly say that I still watch this movie when I find myself a little blue. With its absolutely enchanting visuals and the thrilling story of a fantastical world that can be found in the wardrobe of a countryside home, the Pevensie siblings venture on a wonderous, yet perilous journey. We meet Mr. Tumnus, the faun, the White Witch and her wolves and the mighty Aslan, who protects the siblings from the White Witch. An incredible novel authored by C.S. Lewis and directed by Andrew Adamson is yet another classic movie for the winter.

3. The Shining (1980)
Winter isn’t only about fun, magic and love. Sometimes its also about the mystery, the darkness, the brisk cold and the eerie feeling the lurks in the rustling of the trees to the winter breeze. The Shining movie is a Stephen King horror novel adapted into a movie, starring Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall and Danny Lloyd, directed by Stanley Kubrick. Jack Torrence takes on the role as a caretaker of the snowbound Overlook Hotel that faces extremely harsh weather during winter. Since all the employees leave for vacation and no guests will be staying at the hotel, Jack Torrence moves into the Hotel with his wife Wendy and his son, Danny. Even though Jack is warned about the grotesque ordeal about the previous care-take who murdered his wife and daughters in the hotel, Jack brushes it off with a joke. Jack spends his days typing away since he’s an aspiring writer, but as the isolation becomes deafening, he begins to exhibit unusual and eerie behaviour which Wendy soon realizes could be a threat to her and her son’s life. While trying to dodge her husband’s malice, the hotel’s true colors are brought into perspective as well.

4. Little Women (2019)
Based on a novel authored by Louisa May Alcott, Little Women is a gentle and a refreshing movie. Marmee and her four daughters Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth are to fend for themselves while their father is away fight serving in the Civil war. Unlike any other books about women, the bunch here don’t all have a cliché happy ending. Each sister has their very own purpose and terms to live by. Jo is a budding writer who just can’t get a break in a male-dominated industry while trying to stay afloat and not let her poverty drown her. Meg is married, but her life did not turn out fine. Amy is in Paris with her wealthy aunt going to art school while also being courted by a prospective suitor. Beth, the musically talented sister, when she comes down with a terrible illness, the March ladies are reunited. And then there’s Laurie. Theodore Laurence, the handsome next-door neighbour who was rejected by Jo, who seems to have not moved on well from Jo but seems to be catching a feeling of some sort for Amy.

5. Crimson Peak (2015)
Before we dive into the plot, I’m going to say two names. Guillermo Del Toro and Tom Hiddleston. If those two names did not convince you, Mia Wasikowska and Jessica Chastain should seal the deal although the first two names should’ve been enough. Crimson Peak is a spooky, gothic, mystery tale. Edith falls in love with Sir Thomas Sharpe, a man her father had desperately warned her about. He’s handsome and seductive and Edith finds herself smitten with him. She weds him and is swept off to his grungy and gothic mansion where he lives with his sister Lady Lucille, very beautiful but just as eerie as the mansion itself who is also the protector their dark family secrets. Hidden inside the mansion are the voices of the haunting ghosts with whom Lady Lucille can communicate. Edith does everything in her effort to decipher the ghostly visions that haunt the halls of the mansion. But she soon comes to understand, it’s not the ghost she must fear but the ones that are alive. This masterpiece of Guillermo Del Toro is definitely a must watch at any time of the year but during winter it would be an emersive experience you’d never forget.
